Grammar Rules — Direct & Indirect Speech

Direct Speech reports the exact words of the speaker using quotation marks (वक्ता के हुबहू कथनों को उद्धरण चिह्नों में लिखना।). e.g., He said, "I am happy."

Indirect Speech reports the substance of the speaker's words without exact quotes, making necessary tense and pronoun changes (कथनों को अपने शब्दों में कहना।). e.g., He said that he was happy.

Part names: In `He said, "I write"`, "He said" is the Reporting Verb (RV), and "I write" is the Reported Speech (RS). Connective word "that" joins them in indirect speech.

Practice Examples — वाक्य संरचना उदाहरण

Sita said, "I am tired." | Sita said that she was tired.
