Choosing Tiles for Different Rooms

By Ratan Updated: 17 Oct 2026
A technical architectural guide to selecting ceramic vs vitrified tiles, evaluating PEI wear ratings, slip-resistance coefficient of friction, and water absorption rates.

Overview

The Technical Science of Tile Selection

Selecting residential floor and wall tiles is too often treated as a purely aesthetic decision: homeowners pick whatever color, marble vein pattern, or glossy finish looks attractive in a well-lit showroom. However, installing high-gloss polished tiles in a wet bathroom shower creates a dangerous slip-and-fall hazard, while installing soft ceramic wall tiles on a high-traffic living room floor leads to chipped glazes, deep scratches, and hairline fractures within months. Sizing tiles requires balancing chemical composition, water absorption, and mechanical wear ratings.

Ceramic vs. Vitrified: Fundamental Physical Distinctions

Technical Attribute Traditional Ceramic Tiles Vitrified Tiles (GVT / PGVT / Full Body)
Manufacturing Process Earthen red or white clay baked at moderate temperatures (1,000°C–1,100°C). Hydraulically pressed silica, quartz, feldspar, and clay fired at extreme temperatures (1,200°C–1,250°C), creating glass-like vitrification.
Water Absorption (IS 15622) High: 3% to 10% water absorption. Near Impermeable: < 0.05% water absorption. Highly stain and moisture resistant.
Structural Strength & Thickness Moderate breaking strength; prone to cracking under heavy point loads. Exceptional modulus of rupture (> 35 N/mm²); highly resistant to abrasion and impact.
Optimal Placement Interior wall cladding, kitchen backsplashes, low-traffic bathrooms. Living rooms, hallways, high-traffic corridors, outdoor patios, commercial floors.

Room-by-Room Specification Blueprint

1. Living Rooms and Hallways

  • Specification: Glazed Vitrified Tiles (GVT) or Polished Glazed Vitrified Tiles (PGVT) in large formats (600x1200 mm or 800x1600 mm).
  • Rationale: Large format tiles minimize the number of grout joints, creating a seamless, expansive aesthetic. High gloss or satin matte finishes reflect light and resist everyday foot traffic scratches (PEI Group IV rating).

2. Bathrooms and Wet Areas

  • Bathroom Floors: Matte-finish anti-skid vitrified or ceramic tiles with an R10 or R11 slip-resistance rating and high Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (DCOF ≥ 0.42). Never install high-gloss polished tiles on bathroom floors.
  • Bathroom Walls: Glazed ceramic or vitrified wall tiles extending all the way up to the ceiling (dado height). Non-porous surfaces prevent moisture absorption and resist mold and soap scum.

3. Kitchen Floors and Splashbacks

  • Kitchen Floors: Matte or rustic finish vitrified tiles that resist acidic food spills (lemon juice, vinegar, turmeric oils).
  • Kitchen Splashback: Smooth glazed ceramic subway tiles or large-format slab surfaces behind cooking hobs. Avoid rough, textured stone tiles where airborne grease particles become trapped in crevices.

4. Outdoor Balconies and Parking

  • Specification: Heavy-duty Full Body Vitrified Tiles (12 mm to 16 mm thickness) or natural flamed granite.
  • Rationale: Outdoor surfaces experience temperature extremes and intense UV radiation. In full-body vitrified tiles, pigment runs through the entire thickness; if chipped, the damage is visually unnoticeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Glazed Vitrified Tiles (GVT) have a printed design layer with a matte, satin, or textured finish. Polished Glazed Vitrified Tiles (PGVT) have an additional clear nano-polish layer applied over the glaze, giving them a high-gloss, mirror-like reflection.
All building structures undergo subtle thermal expansion and contraction. Laying tiles with a 2 mm to 3 mm spacer gap filled with flexible epoxy grout accommodates expansion, preventing tiles from buckling, tenting, or cracking.
Extremely dark high-gloss black or dark brown tiles actually show dust, water spots, and light scratches more prominently than neutral medium tones (such as beige, light grey, or stone texture).
