How to Make Useful Revision Notes

By Ratan Updated: 16 Oct 2026

Make revision notes with formula conditions, worked examples, recall questions and corrections instead of copying the textbook into another notebook.

Overview

Write notes that help you answer questions

Revision notes should reduce the work needed to revisit a topic. A second, beautifully copied textbook often does the opposite: it takes time to create and still leaves the reader searching for the main point. Useful notes identify what must be recalled, where reasoning matters, and which mistakes need another attempt.

Choose a task before choosing a format

For a numerical chapter, use a worked example and a short explanation of the conditions behind each formula. For a history topic, a timeline and cause-and-effect links may be clearer. For biology, a labelled sketch with the process in order can reveal missing relationships. Choose the format that supports the questions you will face rather than forcing every topic into a mind map.

A one-page example: a straight-line motion problem

Divide a page into a question margin, an explanation area and a short error box. In the margin write “When can v = u + at be used?” In the explanation area write “For constant acceleration over the chosen time interval” and define the symbols and units. Add one small calculation with the sign convention stated. In the error box record “Do not use constant-acceleration equations when acceleration varies without checking the model.”

Now add a graph prompt: “What does the area under a velocity–time graph represent?” Draw the signed area for a simple case. A note that includes units, conditions and a counterexample is more useful than a formula copied alone. Keep the textbook chapter or page reference so that a confusing detail can be checked later.

Use a short production routine

  1. Study a manageable section and work through an example.
  2. Close the source and write its key idea in your own words.
  3. Reopen the source to correct omissions and technical terms.
  4. Add two or three questions you should be able to answer without looking.
  5. Mark a review date and leave room for corrections from later practice.

Separate stable content from current facts

For current affairs, rules or exam instructions, record the source and date. Avoid blending an old notification with a new syllabus on the same undated page. For a derivation, preserve the reasoning steps; for a fact list, show a meaningful grouping. Highlighting should identify a small number of signals rather than colour every line.

Improve the notes after a mock test

If you chose a wrong option because two terms looked similar, add a two-column distinction and a question that tests it. If you knew the concept but made an arithmetic error, practise the calculation; rewriting the theory may not address the problem. Keep a separate error log so a page does not grow into an unreadable collection of unrelated warnings.

Test the page by covering the explanation area and answering the margin questions. If the questions are vague, rewrite them. If you need the book for everything, the notes may be missing context or you may need to study the topic again. The measure is whether the page supports an accurate explanation or solution, not its length or decoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use the space needed to preserve the key reasoning and examples. A fixed page count is less useful than being able to answer the topic questions.
Include selected steps with the reason for each one, then attempt a similar problem independently. Copying alone does not check understanding.
Add a precise correction for the error, such as a condition you missed or two terms you confused. Practise the relevant question type again.
