Reading Comprehension Practice at Home

By Ratan Updated: 16 Oct 2026

Practise direct answers, inference and main idea using an original library passage, with explanations of wrong options and a home review routine.

Overview

Practise comprehension by showing where an answer comes from

Reading comprehension involves understanding what a passage states, how its ideas connect and what can reasonably be inferred. It is not a contest to find an answer that sounds sensible in general. A reliable practice routine links each response to words, structure or evidence in the passage.

Use a short passage and three kinds of question

Read this original practice passage: “The school library extended its closing time by one hour during the examination month. Evening attendance increased, but morning attendance remained almost unchanged. The librarian will compare borrowing records before deciding whether the new hours should continue.”

Direct question: When was the closing time extended? Answer: during the examination month. Inference: Can we conclude that longer hours increased book borrowing? Not yet; the passage reports attendance and says borrowing records will be compared. Main purpose: The passage describes a trial change and the information needed to review it.

Explain incorrect options, not just the correct one

If an option says “The school permanently extended library hours”, it adds a permanence claim that is absent. “Students stopped visiting in the morning” contradicts the statement that morning attendance was almost unchanged. “Evening attendance rose” matches the passage. Noticing the exact unsupported word can be more useful than writing only the correct option letter.

A home practice routine

  1. Choose a passage short enough to review carefully.
  2. Read once for the main idea and note changes in argument, time or speaker.
  3. Answer a few questions without consulting an answer key.
  4. Underline the supporting sentence or explain the inference in one line.
  5. Check the answer and classify each error: vocabulary, missed detail, unsupported inference or misunderstanding of the question.

After an untimed attempt becomes accurate, add a realistic time limit based on your actual examination. Rushing every passage from the beginning makes it harder to tell whether a mistake came from language, reasoning or pace.

Deal with unfamiliar vocabulary

Use the surrounding sentence to propose a meaning, then check a dictionary if the word matters. In the sample, “trial change” suggests a temporary test, but does not specify its exact future duration. Avoid guessing a word from its spelling alone. Keep a small vocabulary record with the original sentence and a new sentence of your own.

Review different passage types

Rotate an explanatory passage, an argument and a narrative. For an argument, identify the claim, supporting evidence and a possible qualification. For a narrative, track who knows what and when. A personal opinion about the topic is separate from the author's position.

Measure progress by fewer repeated error types and better evidence for answers. Do not judge a week solely by the number of passages completed. Revisit one previously missed question after a gap and explain why its distractors fail without looking at your old notes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Follow the question instructions. For passage-based answers, prefer what the text supports rather than an unrelated fact you already know.
Identify the exact sentence or inference involved and explain which word or assumption made the chosen option wrong.
Start by locating the reason for mistakes. Add examination-style timing while keeping time to review accuracy and reasoning afterwards.
