Overview

The Official Examination Architecture of SSC CHSL 2026

The SSC CHSL recruitment process consists of a two-tier computer-based examination system. Tier 1 serves as an initial competitive screening stage, while Tier 2 evaluates mathematical proficiency, reasoning acuity, linguistic comprehension, general awareness, computer literacy, and real-time keyboard typing speed.

1. Tier 1 Examination Scheme (Screening Stage)

Part & Subject Questions Marks Duration Negative Penalty
Part I: English Language (Basic Knowledge) 25 50 60 Minutes (Composite time for all 4 parts) -0.50 Marks per incorrect attempt

Part III: Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic) 25 50
Part IV: General Awareness 25 50

3. Tactical Marking and Time-Management Strategy

  • Targeting the 360-Mark Core: To secure a preferred appointment in your home state, aim for a raw score of 290+ out of 360 in Tier 2 Sections I and II.
  • The 60-Minute Section I Split: With 60 questions to solve in 60 minutes, dedicate the first 25 minutes to securing 28+ reasoning answers, leaving 35 minutes for mathematical calculations.
  • Negative Marking Discipline: With a 1-mark deduction for every wrong 3-mark answer, uncalculated guesses wipe out hard-earned points. Skip questions where you cannot eliminate at least two choices.

4. Qualifying Standards for Section III Modules

  1. Computer Knowledge Module: Candidates must score a minimum of 30% (UR - 13.5 marks), 25% (OBC/EWS - 11.25 marks), and 20% (SC/ST - 9 marks) out of 45 marks. Failure to qualify disqualifies you regardless of your Section I & II score.
  2. Skill Test / Typing Test: A typing speed of 35 words per minute (English) or 30 words per minute (Hindi) with an error rate strictly below 7% (UR) or 10% (Reserved) is mandatory for final selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

The final merit list is determined entirely based on marks scored in Section I and Section II of Tier 2 Paper 1, out of a maximum of 360 marks (180 marks in Section I + 180 marks in Section II). Tier 1 is qualifying, while Section III (Computer Module and Skill Test) are qualifying hurdles.
In Tier 1, each incorrect response incurs a negative penalty of 0.50 marks (out of 2 marks per question). In Tier 2, each correct question carries 3 marks, and each incorrect response incurs a severe penalty of 1.00 mark (a 33.3% deduction). Reckless guessing in Tier 2 severely damages merit rankings.
Yes. Tier 2 is conducted in two continuous sessions on the very same day. Session 1 consists of the 2-hour 15-minute written CBT (Sections I, II, and Computer Module). Following a short break, Session 2 conducts the 10 to 15-minute Skill/Typing Test.
