National Scholarship Portal (NSP) Guide for Students

By Ratan Updated: 17 Oct 2026
A complete application and verification walkthrough for central, state, and UGC scholarships hosted on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP / scholarships.gov.in).

Overview

The Digital Gateway to Government Scholarships

The National Scholarship Portal (NSP), hosted at scholarships.gov.in, is the Government of India's single-window digital platform for administering pre-matric, post-matric, and top-class higher education scholarships. Covering schemes funded by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Department of Higher Education, and UGC/AICTE, NSP coordinates transparent application processing, multi-level institutional verification, and direct subsidy credit via PFMS.

Step 1: One-Time Registration (OTR) and Biometric e-KYC

Modern NSP protocols mandate that every student create a permanent One-Time Registration (OTR) profile before applying for specific scholarship schemes:

  1. Download the official NSP OTR App on an Android smartphone or visit scholarships.gov.in.
  2. Enter your Aadhaar Number and complete Aadhaar Face Authentication or OTP authentication. For minor students without independent mobile numbers, parental Aadhaar consent is utilized.
  3. The system generates a unique 14-digit NSP OTR Number. This number remains valid throughout your entire academic journey from school to postgraduate studies.

Step 2: Selecting and Applying for Eligible Schemes

  • Log into your student dashboard using your OTR credentials and password.
  • Fill in your current academic profile: state of domicile, current school/college AISHE or DISE code, course name, year of study, and previous academic percentage.
  • Input socio-economic details: caste category, religion, family annual income, and disability status.
  • The portal automatically displays all Central, UGC, and State Schemes you are eligible for based on your entered parameters. Select the desired scheme, upload required documents (Income Certificate, Bonafide Student Certificate, Fee Receipt), and submit.

The Multi-Tier Institutional Verification Workflow

Verification Tier Designated Authority Action Required
L1: Institute Level (INO) Institute Nodal Officer (Your School / College) Verifies physical admission records, attendance, fee receipts, and marksheet originals.
L2: District Level (DNO) District Welfare / Education Officer Cross-checks institutional authenticity, income certificates, and category validity.
L3: State / Ministry Level Central Ministry / State Directorate Generates the final merit list and pushes payment files to PFMS for DBT credit.

Mandatory Bank Seeding Requirement

Scholarship funds cannot be credited to an account unless it is actively mapped on the NPCI Aadhaar Payment Bridge. Students must ensure their bank account is active, has no debit/credit freeze limits, and is formally seeded with Aadhaar at their bank branch.

Frequently Asked Questions

A student can submit applications for multiple schemes they qualify for, but under central financial rules, a student can accept and receive disbursements from only ONE government scholarship per academic year.
AISHE (All India Survey on Higher Education) codes identify recognized colleges and universities, while U-DISE codes identify schools. Your educational institution must be registered on NSP for your application to be verified.
A 'Defective' status means the verification officer identified an error (such as a blurry document or incorrect income figure). The application is unlocked for correction; log in, fix the specified defect, and re-submit before the defect rectification deadline.
