A sample of matter possesses a definite volume but no definite shape, adapting to the shape of the container it occupies. At the microscopic level, the particles are:

1. Held very close in an orderly fashion with no freedom of movement
2. Arranged in a rigid crystalline lattice occupying fixed coordinates
3. Far apart with rapid and completely unconstrained movement
4. Close to each other but capable of moving around
