A 20 litre container at 400 K contains \( \text{CO}_2\text{(g)} \) at pressure \( 0.4\text{ atm} \) and an excess of \( \text{SrO} \) (neglect the volume of solid \( \text{SrO} \)). The volume of the container is now decreased by moving the movable piston fitted in the container. The maximum volume of the container, when pressure of \( \text{CO}_2 \) attains its maximum value, will be _______.\n(Given that: \( \text{SrCO}_{3\text{(s)}} \rightleftharpoons \text{SrO}_{\text{(s)}} + \text{CO}_{2\text{(g)}} \), \( K_{\text{p}} = 1.6\text{ atm} \))

  1. 5 litre
  2. 10 litre
  3. 4 litre
  4. 2 litre

Correct answer · Option 1

5 litre

Explanation

At equilibrium, pressure of \( \text{CO}_2 \) is equal to \( K_{\text{p}} = 1.6\text{ atm} \). Initial moles of \( \text{CO}_2 \) = \( \frac{P_i V_i}{RT} = \frac{0.4 \times 20}{RT} = \frac{8}{RT} \). At max pressure, \( P = 1.6\text{ atm} \), total moles \( n = \frac{PV_{\text{max}}}{RT} \Rightarrow 1.6 \times V_{\text{max}} = 8 \Rightarrow V_{\text{max}} = 5\text{ L} \).
