Cleavage of anisole (\( \text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{OCH}_3 \)) with \( \text{HI} \) yields phenol and methyl iodide because the \( \text{C}_{\text{aryl}}-\text{O} \) bond has partial double bond character and cannot be cleaved easily.
