Narration – Interrogative Sentences

Direct & Indirect Speech

Grammar Rules — Direct & Indirect Speech

1
For questions starting with Helping Verbs (is, am, are, have, will, do, etc.), use connective "if" or "whether" (सहायक क्रिया से शुरू होने वाले प्रश्नों में connective word "if" या "whether" लगाएं।). reporting verb said/said to changes to "asked".
2
For questions starting with WH-words (who, where, why, what, how, etc.), do not use any connective. The WH-word itself acts as the connective (WH-शब्दों से शुरू होने वाले प्रश्नों में कोई additional connective नहीं लगाते, WH-शब्द स्वयं connective का काम करता है।).
3
Convert the interrogative structure into assertive statement (question sentence structure changes to positive statement form - verb goes after subject). e.g., "Where do you live?" -> where I lived.

Practice Examples — वाक्य संरचना उदाहरण

He said to me, "Are you coming?" | He asked me if I was coming. (helping verb question)
