Introduction to Full Stack Web Development

By Ratan Updated: 15 Oct 2026

Understand the end-to-end web architecture: Frontend UI, Backend APIs, Databases, and Server Deployment.

Level: Beginner to Advanced
Duration: ~60 Mins Deep-Dive

Follow one feature across every layer

Full stack development connects a user interface, an application server and persistent data. The useful skill is not memorizing a list of frameworks; it is tracing a requirement through these boundaries and verifying the result.

Example feature: enrol in a course

  1. The browser displays a course and an enrolment action.
  2. The user activates the control; the frontend sends a request with the course identifier.
  3. The server identifies the user, validates the course and checks permission or eligibility rules.
  4. The database stores the enrolment subject to a uniqueness constraint.
  5. The server returns a clear success or failure response.
  6. The UI updates state and lets the user recover from errors.

A button changing to “Enrolled” before the server confirms a write is not proof that enrolment exists. Conversely, a database write can succeed while the browser loses the response; the design must address duplicate retries.

A practical learning stack

Use semantic HTML, CSS and JavaScript for the browser; a server framework such as Express for HTTP handlers; and a relational database such as PostgreSQL for structured records. React can organize interactive UI once basic browser behavior is understood. Other stacks are valid; keep one small feature working before adding more tools.

Build in vertical slices

GET /api/courses list public courses
GET /api/courses/:id show one course
POST /api/enrolments request an enrolment
GET /api/me/enrolments list the current user's enrolments

For each slice, define request fields, response shape, validation, ownership rules and tests. Keep database credentials and private keys on the server. Browser environment variables are not secret once bundled into frontend code.

Working agreement

Use version control, reproducible dependency installation and separate development/production configuration. Record migrations alongside application changes. Add useful error logs without passwords or session tokens. A deployment should have a rollback strategy and a way to verify its health.

Practice deliverable

Build a read-only course catalogue first. A successful submission includes a browser page, an HTTP endpoint, a database table, a seed record and a test showing the same course title reaches the page. Then test missing records and server failure. Explain which layer should validate an incoming identifier and why frontend checks alone are insufficient.

हिन्दी संकेत: feature तभी पूरा है जब UI, API और database का परिणाम एक-दूसरे से मेल खाता हो।
